How to Get Your Business on Google Maps in Ranchi

When someone in Ranchi searches "computer repair near me" or "best school in Bariatu", the three businesses on the map get most of the calls. That map is not decided by your website. It is decided by your Google Business Profile β€” and most profiles here are half filled in.

Inside a local clothing shop, the kind of business customers find through Google Maps

For a local business, the free listing on Google Maps often brings in more enquiries than the website does. It is what appears when people search with "near me" or a locality name, it carries your phone number and directions, and on a phone it is one tap from a call.

Google says local results are ranked on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the person searching), and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). You cannot move your shop closer to every customer. The other two are almost entirely in your hands.

Step 1: Claim the profile and get it verified

Search for your business name on Google Maps first. There is a good chance a listing already exists β€” created by Google from public data, or by a customer, or by someone who worked for you years ago. Claim that one rather than making a new one; two listings for the same business split your reviews and confuse the ranking.

Sign in at business.google.com with a Google account the business owns β€” not a staff member's personal Gmail that leaves when they do β€” and follow the verification steps. Google chooses the method. Today it is most often a short video: you record the signboard, the street outside, and something that shows you run the place, such as the shop counter or equipment. Some businesses are offered phone, email or postcard instead.

Step 2: Use your real name β€” nothing added

Your business name on the profile must be the name you use in the real world: on your signboard, your letterhead, your bills. Google's guidelines forbid adding keywords or locations to it.

"Sharma Electronics" is correct. "Sharma Electronics β€” Best Mobile Repair Shop in Ranchi" is not, however many listings nearby seem to get away with it. It works until a competitor reports it or Google reviews it, and then the profile can be suspended β€” usually at the worst possible time.

Step 3: Choose categories carefully

The primary category is the single most important choice on the profile. It tells Google what you are, and it decides which searches you can appear for at all.

  • Pick the most specific primary category that is true. "Dentist" over "Doctor"; "Website designer" over "Consultant".
  • Add secondary categories only for things you genuinely offer as a service. Google allows several, but every one should be real.
  • Look at what the businesses already ranking for your main search have chosen. It is often the quickest way to find the right category.

Step 4: Storefront or service area

If customers come to you β€” a shop, a clinic, a coaching centre β€” show your address. If you go to customers β€” a plumber, an AC technician, a caterer β€” set it up as a service-area business: hide the street address and list the areas you cover instead, such as Ranchi, Kanke, Namkum or Ramgarh.

Hiding an address you do serve customers at, or showing one you do not, both work against you.

Step 5: Make your details match everywhere

Google cross-checks your name, address and phone number against the rest of the web: Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, your Facebook page and your own website. When they disagree β€” an old phone number on one directory, a different spelling on another, the shop that moved from Lalpur to Kanke still listed at Lalpur β€” Google is less confident about all of them.

  • Write your name, address and phone number down once, exactly, and use that exact version everywhere.
  • Update old directory listings rather than leaving them. A directory showing your previous business or address is actively harmful.
  • Put the same details on your website, ideally in the footer of every page.

Step 6: Fill in everything else

  • Hours, including the holidays you close for. A customer who arrives to a locked shutter during Chhath or Sarhul because the profile said "open" does not come back.
  • Phone number β€” the one that is actually answered. In this market, many people will call or WhatsApp straight from the listing without ever visiting your website.
  • Your website address, so the profile and the site support each other.
  • Services or products, each with a short plain description. These help you appear for searches your category alone would miss.
  • A description in your own words: what you do, for whom, and where. No keyword lists.

Step 7: Real photographs

Profiles with photos get noticeably more calls and direction requests than those without, and stock images do not count for much. Add:

  • The outside of the building and the signboard, taken in daylight, so people can recognise it from the road.
  • The inside β€” counter, waiting area, classroom, workshop.
  • You and your team at work.
  • Your products or finished work.

Ten good photographs on day one, then a few new ones every month, is a better pattern than fifty uploaded at once and nothing after.

Step 8: Reviews β€” ask for them, and answer them

Reviews are the biggest part of prominence you can influence. They also do most of the persuading: a customer comparing three listings reads the reviews before they call.

  • Ask every satisfied customer, every time. Google gives you a direct review link under "Ask for reviews" in your profile β€” send it on WhatsApp right after a job goes well.
  • Ask all customers, not just the happy ones you are sure of. Google's rules do not allow you to filter who you ask.
  • Never offer a discount, a gift or anything else in return for a review, and never write reviews for yourself or ask staff to. Google removes them, and can restrict the profile.
  • Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and briefly. A calm reply to a complaint often does more for the next customer than five-star reviews do.
  • A steady trickle beats a sudden burst. Forty reviews in a week and then nothing looks exactly as unnatural as it is.

Step 9: Keep it alive

A profile is not a one-time form. Post an update when you have something worth saying β€” an offer, a new service, a finished project, a holiday closure. Answer messages if you turn messaging on; a slow reply is visible to customers. And check the profile every month, because anyone can suggest edits to it, and Google sometimes accepts them.

What does not work

  • Creating a second listing for the same business, or one per locality you serve. That is treated as spam.
  • Buying reviews, or "GMB ranking packages" that promise first position. They put the whole listing at risk.
  • Stuffing the name or description with keywords.
  • Setting up the profile and never opening it again.

None of this is complicated, but it does take an afternoon to set up properly and a few minutes a week to keep up. If you would rather it was done for you β€” or your listing has been suspended and you need to know why β€” that is part of what our local SEO work covers.
